Vote rightly in 2023 to change the country’s destiny, SDP chairman challenges Nigerians

Published

on

The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, (SDP), Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, has indicated that Nigerians can change the nation’s trajectory of bad leadership and under-development during the 2023 general elections by voting rightly
He gave the indication in a statement released in Abuja, on Saturday, he reminded Nigerians about the power of their votes to decide their own destiny as the country enters the critical phase of electioneering ahead of 2023.
“As Nigerians who desire a national retrieval and restoration of the lost glory, we must use our thumbs to rescue ourselves by voting in responsible and committed, and patriotic people into positions of authority in the next general elections,” Alh. Gabam stated.
Therefore the SDP national chairman advised the electorate against selling their votes to mercantile politicians, whose only promise is to continue on the same trajectory of abysmal leadership failure that we have witnessed as a nation.
According to him, “Nigerians should ask the right questions from the current administrators and its major players who are jostling to be brought back to power, about what more they could offer the country, after being a part and parcel of what brought us to where we are today.
“Shall we reinforce failure of the status quo with a new mandate, and expect any positive improvement in achieving sustainable development? The answer to this critical question from Nigerians, old and young, across the country is a resounding, NO!
“We pray our reflections as a nation about how low we have sunk as a nation will stir positive actions in all of us, and will make us come to the realization and consciousness that we cannot keep doing the same thing over and over again, and expect a different result.
“New results demand new approaches, new strategies, new people, new orientation, new thinking, and new processes. All the foregoing is what the SDP brings to the table towards national development as the only credible alternative to getting the country out of its current socio-economic woes.

“Going forward therefore, the party calls on all of us to be bold enough to walk a new and uncharted path, one that may not even be unfamiliar to us. Why? Because the path we thought we knew, has brought us nothing but failure and pain.
“The power to change the current negative condition of the country for good is in the thumbs of the Nigerian electorate. Going by the prevailing sense of pervading disaffection occasioned by the obvious dashed hopes and expectations, the Nigerian people have resolved to use the power of their votes in 2023 to change the unsavory state of the nation for good by going the way of a refreshing hope that the SDP offers.”
Reflecting on the state of insecurity in Nigeria, the SDP national chairman tasked the Buhari administration to intensify efforts aimed home rescuing Nigerians held hostage by terrorists and kidnappers in various parts of the country.
Alhaji Gabam asked Nigerians to continually pray for victims of violence and other horrendous criminal acts, especially hapless citizens held in captivity by Boko Haram and those also held as hostages by bandits, and kidnappers in forests across the country.
He said: “We are witnesses to the carnage brought about by violence, banditry and acts of criminality induced by political shenanigans and desperation for power which have turned our country to a killing field and an anarchic society. We are witnesses to how social disorder is fast, degrading us as a people and a country.
“Hence, we must realize that we cannot afford further degradation and slide. We must recognize that the hard work of returning peace and stability to our besieged communities and countryside must be borne by every Nigerian compatriot, home and abroad.
“In this regard, it becomes imperative for us to renew our pledges and commitment to peaceful and harmonious co-existence and preserve our diversity. As a people, we must all recommit to doing what is right in our neighbourhoods and communities, and we must pledge to uphold what is right even if we may not immediately gain from it.
“This is the simple and fastest way of achieving our quest of building a good Nigerian society, and spreading the social harmony, peace and justice that we all long for.”

Atiku Abubakar outlines what he would have done for Nigeria’s Economic Reforms

Atiku Abubakar

***Calls for Strategic Planning and Empathy

Former Vice President of Nigeria and 2023 Presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Atiku Abubakar has shared his vision for a reformed Nigerian economy, detailing what he would have done differently to address the country’s current economic challenges.
Responding to public interest in his approach, Abubakar outlined a detailed strategy focused on economic stability, institutional reforms, and social protection for vulnerable Nigerians.

Speaking through his chief spokesperson Mr. Paul Ibe, the former vice President emphasized the need for better planning and strategic reform implementation.
“Rather than focusing on me, Nigerians should be asking what President Tinubu can do now to alleviate the pain caused by his economic policies,” he stated. However, he expressed hope that some of his ideas might inspire solutions for Nigeria’s economic struggles.
Reeling out his strategy that included Comprehensive Economic Planning and Sequencing of Reforms, Abubakar underscored the importance of a well-coordinated reform strategy.
He argued that implementing major fiscal changes, such as fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate adjustments, all at once was too abrupt for Nigeria’s economic environment. “We would have sequenced our reforms to achieve fiscal and monetary alignment and avoid overwhelming the economy,” he explained.
He also dwelled on the need for transparent communication and public engagement highlighting the need for open communication with the public, stressing that public trust is essential for successful reforms. “Transparent communication with the public is essential to build public trust, which is important to ensure that citizens understand what the government is doing,” he said.

“One of Abubakar’s priorities would have been to establish robust social protection programs to shield low-income Nigerians from the impact of economic reforms. “Our reforms would have a human face,” he stated, outlining plans for a social safety net that would provide financial support and economic opportunities for the most vulnerable.
On specific Measures to Boost Economic Development Abubakar proposed the creation of $10b Economic Stimulus Fund to support small businesses across Nigeria.
The fund, he said, would empower MSMEs and support youth employment through targeted skills-to-job programs.
Abubakar’s plan included creation of an Infrastructure Development Unit directly under the presidency to coordinate infrastructure projects across the country.
“The IDU would work with ministries to oversee a $25 billion Infrastructure Development Fund to speed up projects in transportation, energy, and communication.
“To address Nigeria’s currency challenges, Abubakar advocated for a managed-floating exchange rate, rather than a fully flexible rate.
He argued that such an approach would help maintain currency stability while avoiding the pitfalls of a fixed rate system.

Abubakar reiterated his stance on subsidy removal, arguing for a gradual, phased approach that would allow the economy to adjust. He proposed reinvesting the funds saved into healthcare, education, and rural infrastructure, while increasing domestic refining capacity to reduce dependency on fuel imports.

In conclusion, Abubakar expressed hope that President Tinubu’s administration would consider some of these ideas to address the nation’s economic issues, emphasizing that Nigerians deserve leadership that prioritizes their well-being. “I believe that our sacrificial investments today will form the foundation for tomorrow’s development strides,” he said, affirming his commitment to a vision of “a New Nigeria.”
