Nigerian web technology expert Temitope Somuwa has made history as the first African to win the Individual Impact Award at the 2025 International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) Impact Awards, held during the M-Enabling Summit in Washington, D.C.
Sokuwa, a renowned digital accessibility advocate and inclusion strategist, was one of three global recipients of the prestigious honour — and the only African in the category. The IAAP Impact Awards celebrate professionals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and measurable impact in promoting digital accessibility and inclusion worldwide.
Through visionary leadership and hands-on advocacy, Somuwa has become a leading voice for accessible and user-centred innovation. Under his direction, his organisation implemented extensive accessibility training that dramatically improved awareness and adoption of inclusive design practices.
Beyond Nigeria, Somuwa has also made an international mark by advising European teams on compliance strategies for the forthcoming European Accessibility Act (EAA), helping global organisations better prepare for accessibility legislation and build inclusive digital ecosystems.
Held under the theme “Digital Accessibility Innovation — A Deep Dive,” the M-Enabling Summit 2025 brought together policymakers, industry leaders, disability advocates, and technology experts to explore the future of inclusive technology.

According to the IAAP, the Individual Impact Award honours professionals who “drive systemic change, break barriers, and inspire others to make digital spaces truly inclusive.”
Somuwa’s recognition marks a major milestone for Nigeria and Africa, where accessibility and digital inclusion efforts are gaining momentum amid ongoing structural challenges. His achievement signals Africa’s growing influence in shaping global standards for accessibility and inclusive design.
Industry observers have hailed the award as a defining moment for Africa’s accessibility movement — positioning Nigeria as a rising hub for inclusive digital innovation.
The IAAP Impact Awards, presented annually during the M-Enabling Summit, recognise individuals and organisations advancing accessibility across sectors. The 2025 edition featured ten global nominees in the Individual Impact category, with three winners selected for their exceptional contributions.
Temitope Somuwa, a Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC), continues to champion inclusive digital design and accessibility leadership across borders.
