The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has ramped up its anti-corruption offensive, bringing former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, in for questioning over alleged financial irregularities involving ₦189 billion in cash withdrawals.
Tambuwal, who governed Sokoto from 2015 to 2023 and previously served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, arrived at EFCC headquarters in Abuja around 11:30 a.m. on Monday.
He was immediately taken into a private interrogation session with senior investigators.
Sources within the Commission say the inquiries centre on large-scale cash withdrawals said to have violated the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 — a law that strictly limits cash transactions to curb illicit financial flows.
Investigators are probing whether the transactions, allegedly conducted outside banking protocols and cashless policy guidelines, were structured to obscure the movement of public funds.
The EFCC has not issued an official statement, and it remains unclear if Tambuwal will be granted administrative bail.

This latest development follows a wave of high-profile investigations targeting former state executives accused of financial misconduct. Political analysts note that the Commission’s renewed intensity signals an attempt to restore public confidence in governance by holding powerful figures to account, regardless of political status.
The EFCC maintains that the enforcement of anti-money laundering laws is critical to stemming corruption, boosting fiscal transparency, and safeguarding public resources for development priorities.
