***Say he must not be harmed anywhere in Nigeria
The Labour Party (LP) caucus in the House of Representatives has come out swinging against what it calls a “shocking and dangerous threat” to Peter Obi’s life—allegedly made by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
The governor had, at a public event on Friday, warned that Obi “must not come to Edo without security clearance,” claiming three people were killed after Obi visited the state and donated ₦15 million.
“Where did he get the money from?” the governor asked, before issuing a veiled threat: “He shouldn’t come here without clearance.”
However, Labour lawmakers in a fiery statement signed by caucus leader, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, the group blasted the governor’s outburst as “uncivil, unconstitutional, and inciting.”
“Peter Obi is a law-abiding Nigerian who can go anywhere in this country without asking permission. Threats like this are reckless and unacceptable,” the lawmakers fumed.
They described Okpebholo’s rant as “satanic verses” and warned that no harm must come to the former LP presidential candidate.
“We’ll hold Governor Okpebholo responsible if anything happens to Peter Obi,” they declared.
The caucus said the governor’s comments not only embarrassed his office but also sent a dangerous message to young Nigerians about leadership, civility, and democratic conduct.
“What kind of role model is this? A state governor threatening citizens on political grounds? This is how violence spreads.”
The lawmakers also took aim at the governor’s political strong-arming, noting that he had earlier threatened to demolish the house of Rep. Marcus Onobun—until Onobun defected to his party.
“Now that Hon. Onobun has joined the APC, will his house still be demolished? Or was that threat just blackmail?” the statement asked.
Calling on President Tinubu to “call his man in Edo to order,” the LP caucus warned that this pattern of intimidation from APC governors—first in Benue, now Edo—won’t stop Peter Obi’s rising popularity.
“Nigerians are watching. The people are behind Obi, and no amount of threats will change that.”
