In a renewed offensive against kidnapping and violent crime, the Nigeria Police Force has rescued 31 abducted victims in two coordinated operations across Edo and Taraba States, dealing a major blow to criminal gangs operating along key transport routes.
The announcement was made on Friday by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who described the operations as “significant breakthroughs” in the nationwide fight against banditry and abduction.
On Friday, July 11, suspected kidnappers laid siege to commuters along the Fugar-Agenebode road in Etsako East LGA of Edo State, opening fire and killing two people before whisking others away into nearby forested terrain.
A rapid joint operation by police officers and local security teams launched a counter-attack in the Obe Hill area, near Ajaokuta. After a fierce gun battle, the kidnappers fled—many believed to be injured—leaving behind 14 terrified but unharmed victims.
“The swift coordination between local operatives and our tactical teams made the difference,” said Adejobi. “We are hunting down the fleeing suspects and will bring them to justice.”
Barely 24 hours later, on Saturday, July 12, a white Toyota bus travelling from Enugu to Yola was ambushed along the Wukari highway, near Federal University Wukari. The 17 passengers were abducted by armed men and taken into the surrounding bush.
Acting swiftly on a distress call, police officers, supported by sister security agencies, mobilised to the scene. The kidnappers, sensing the pressure, abandoned all 17 victims unhurt and escaped before reinforcements closed in.
“The victims were safely recovered, and search operations are ongoing in the area to apprehend the perpetrators,” the police spokesperson confirmed.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the gallantry of the officers involved, calling the operations a clear demonstration of the police’s strengthened resolve to secure the nation.
“No criminal network will be allowed to operate freely in this country,” he said. “We are dismantling these gangs, one cell at a time.”
The police leadership also reiterated its call for public vigilance, encouraging citizens to report suspicious activities and support the efforts of security agencies.
As insecurity continues to challenge many regions, these operations signal growing coordination, tactical response, and pressure on criminal elements across Nigeria’s highways and hinterlands.
