President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session convened on Thursday to pay tribute to Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82.
The development was disclosed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, via a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“President Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri as MUHAMMADU Buhari University. He announced the honour at the session of tributes of the Federal Executive Council to his late predecessor,” Onanuga wrote.
The renaming is part of a series of national tributes being held in memory of Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983–1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015–2023.
