The Jigawa State Government has endorsed the Federal Government’s Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) Initiative, calling it a bold and timely move to reform healthcare financing in Nigeria.
Speaking at the launch of a four-day capacity-building workshop in Dutse, Commissioner for Health Dr. Muhammad Abdullahi Kainuwa reaffirmed the state’s strong support for the reform, highlighting its potential to improve coordination, minimize waste, and optimize the use of health resources.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim, the Commissioner said SWAp’s unified funding model—designed to align federal, state, and local government budgets—will “eliminate duplication and foster greater transparency.”
“This is more than a funding model—it’s a reset button for Nigeria’s healthcare system,” Dr. Kainuwa noted.
He added that the next phase will see the launch of a centralized SWAp portal, where all health activities and funds can be tracked under one coordinated system built on One Plan, One Platform, One Mechanism for implementation, evaluation, and funding.
In his address, Mr. Gebiral Peter, representing the Federal Ministry of Health, said the platform would also help align donor programs with Nigeria’s health priorities, while giving citizens access to real-time data on services and spending.
“It’s a game changer.
From Abuja to the remotest health post, we want a clear, visible chain of accountability,” he said.
Dr. Atiku Hafizu, the SWAp Coordinating Officer and Special Adviser to the Governor, said 70 stakeholders were participating in the training, which would empower them to drive the initiative at local and state levels.
“This isn’t just about funding—it’s about trust, impact, and building a healthier Jigawa,” Hafizu added.
The SWAp Initiative, which aligns with the national drive for Universal Health Coverage (UHC), is expected to eliminate fragmented projects and replace them with a harmonized, transparent, and impact-driven system that puts patients at the center of public healthcare.
