Nigeria was plunged into mourning on Sunday as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led a national outpouring of grief following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, a man he described as “a soldier, a statesman, and a symbol of national discipline.”
Buhari passed away peacefully in a UK hospital at the age of 82, drawing the curtain on a towering life of service that spanned both military and democratic leadership.
In a moving tribute personally signed and released late Sunday evening, President Tinubu eulogized his predecessor as a man of “quiet strength and unshakable belief in Nigeria’s promise.” He announced that all flags across the nation would fly at half-mast for seven days, and that an emergency Federal Executive Council meeting will be held on Tuesday in Buhari’s honour.
“President Buhari served Nigeria with unwavering dedication… Duty, honour, and a deep commitment to the unity and progress of our nation defined his life,” Tinubu said.
From the dusty trenches of military command in the 1980s to the global stage as a two-term democratic President (2015–2023), Buhari’s story was one of resilience, austerity, and reform. Often described as a Spartan figure in an age of flamboyance, he carved a controversial but lasting legacy—anchored in his war against corruption and his iron resolve to restore order in public life.
“He championed discipline in public service and placed the country above personal interest at every turn,” Tinubu stated, adding that Buhari would receive “full state honours befitting his immense contributions to Nigeria.”
The President also extended condolences to Buhari’s wife Aisha, their children, the Daura Emirate Council, and the people of Katsina State, his home base and political stronghold.
The death of the former president has ignited a rare moment of reflection across Nigeria’s sharply divided political landscape. For many, Buhari represented an era of order; for others, a symbol of uncompromising governance in an age of political drift.
