In a major political realignment, founding member and Board of Trustees stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adamu Waziri, has resigned from the party, declaring it no longer represents the ideals of a credible opposition.
Waziri made the announcement on Monday at his Dogo Tebo Ward in Potiskum, Yobe State, where he formally handed over his PDP membership card to Ward Chairman Malam Muhammad Bomai, in line with the party’s constitutional procedure.
“I was a member of the PDP, and due to the exigencies of the moment and in the interest of the nation, I have decided to resign,” Waziri stated. “The PDP has lost its way and can no longer provide the strong, principled opposition Nigeria needs.”
Waziri announced his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and urged his supporters to join him in championing a more visionary and people-focused political movement.
Calling his exit a “difficult but necessary decision,” Waziri said the PDP’s leadership had strayed far from the founding values of democracy, accountability, and service.
In a dramatic turn, Malam Muhammad Bomai, the PDP Ward Chairman who received Waziri’s resignation, also announced his departure from the PDP to join the ADC.
“Waziri has been an institution within the PDP, and we will feel his absence deeply,” Bomai said. “But I stand with his conviction and have also decided to defect to the ADC.”
The twin defections are a blow to the PDP’s grassroots presence in Yobe and signal mounting frustration among party elders. Observers say this could trigger further shifts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
