The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has sharply criticized the federal government for its silence and inaction in the face of rising national tragedies, warning that Nigeria is in desperate need of leadership rooted in vision, integrity, and humanity.
In a reflective statement titled “What Cannot Be Hidden in Leadership” shared on his X handle, Obi said the government’s failure to respond to catastrophic events—such as the recent flooding in Niger State and the mass killings in Benue—has laid bare the absence of true leadership at the highest levels.
“Leadership either succeeds or fails—there’s no middle ground, and failure cannot be hidden,” Obi wrote. “We are witnessing a collapse in the core responsibilities of leadership.”
He emphasized that Nigerians must begin to look beyond politics of tribe and religion and instead focus on four essential leadership traits: competence, capacity, character, and compassion.
“No nation moves forward under leaders who lack these attributes,” he said. “Competence means understanding the issues. Capacity is having the mental and physical strength to address them. Character ensures integrity and accountability. And compassion brings humanity to governance.”
Obi cited the devastating flood in Niger that claimed nearly 200 lives, and the massacre of over 200 civilians in Benue State, including soldiers—tragedies he said received no presidential visit, no national mourning, no visible response.
“This is a country where leaders are absent in moments of national pain. We have normalised silence in the face of suffering.”
Drawing comparisons with other countries, he recalled how Indian and South African leaders physically visited disaster sites and stood by their citizens during moments of grief.
“True leaders show up. They lead with empathy. They comfort the broken and act in times of crisis. That is what we must demand.”
Peter Obi concluded with a passionate call to action: “Nigeria does not just need another president—it needs a leader with heart and vision. A new Nigeria is POssible, but only when we choose better.”
