As the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepares to screen chairmanship aspirants for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), concerns have emerged over the eligibility of the incumbent Chairman, Hon. Christopher Zaka Maikalangu.

A group within the party, under the banner of Concerned FCT APC Stalwarts, held a press conference urging the party leadership to disqualify Maikalangu from the screening process. The group cited allegations of incompetence, certificate forgery, and anti-party activities as grounds for their call.

According to the group’s coordinator, Mallam Haruna Musa, allowing the incumbent to contest would undermine the credibility and electoral strength of the APC in the Federal Capital Territory. “It would be a grave mistake for the APC to allow Mr. Christopher Maikalangu to participate in the AMAC Chairmanship screening. He is not qualified—academically, morally, or legally—to represent the party in any capacity,” Musa stated.

The group referenced a recent interaction between the AMAC Chairman and the Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, during which Maikalangu was reportedly criticized for his inability to address pressing security challenges, including the provision of operational vehicles to local police units.

They also pointed to the ongoing strike by members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and other AMAC staff as evidence of administrative lapses under Maikalangu’s leadership, claiming it has negatively impacted education and service delivery within the council.

In their appeal, the group called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the FCT Minister, the APC National Chairman, and other key stakeholders to intervene decisively by halting Maikalangu’s re-election bid, arguing that doing so is vital for the integrity and progress of the party in the FCT.

As screening proceeds, these calls add a layer of complexity to what is expected to be a closely watched selection process within the party.
