The 8th Kogi State House of Assembly on Wednesday celebrated its two years of “remarkable legislative achievements”, with passage of a total of 57 bills, 68 motions and adoption of 236 resolutions.
Speaker of the House, Rt Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf disclosed this in his speech at a special session to mark the the end of the second year legislative session in Lokoja.
Speaker Yusuf said the House also confirmed 87 Public Officers and processed 26 public petitions as he underscored the Assembly’s commitment to transparency, accountability and service.
One notable achievement, according to him, is the passage of the bill for the establishment of Kogi State University, Kabba, which is set to graduate its first batch of students.
Rt Hon. Yusuf revealed that the House has also gave legal backing to the law for a free education programme across the state, repealed and re-enacted the state scholarship law to ensure students receive bursaries with ease.
He noted that the House, in the last two years, had taken bold steps to improve the welfare of its staff, including the payment of entitlements under the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS).
He emphasized the House’s commitment to upholding the trust reposed in them by the people and striving for greater legislative impact.
“The House has also taken steps towards partial autonomy, granting greater control over its administrative and financial operations*, he said.
On the Legislative Assembly’s cordial relationship with the Executive, the Speaker said, “The Assembly’s partnership with the Executive branch has been built on mutual respect and a shared goal of improving the lives of Kogi citizens.
“The past two years have truly shown what we can accomplish when we work together with commitment, unity and a common vision for the growth and well-being of our dear State.
“From the outset, my colleagues and I committed ourselves to fostering an environment of peace and mutual respect.
“This commitment has been unwavering, resulting in a harmonious legislative atmosphere where diverse opinions are not only welcomed, but seen as vital to our collective decision-making process.
“The absence of internal conflicts and the presence of constructive debates have been the bedrock of our legislative success.
“As we mark the second anniversary of this Honourable House, I wish to use this moment to engage our constituents across Kogi State on the importance of appreciating the unique role of the legislature.
“Our role is often a behind-the-scenes endeavour, less visible, yet absolutely vital. In a functional democracy, governance stands on a tripod: the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary.
The Speaker asserted that as the Assembly looks to the future, it remains committed to enacting laws that promote social justice, economic growth, and the overall well-being of Kogi citizens. (Ends)
