Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, joined global dignitaries at St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday to bid farewell to Pope Francis, describing the late pontiff as “a quiet revolutionary” who redefined spiritual leadership through humility and justice.
Standing alongside Cardinal Francis Arinze, Obi honored the Pope not only as a global spiritual figure but also as a personal mentor.
As a Papal Knight and member of Scholars Occultantes, Obi noted the Pope’s deep influence on his values and vision of leadership.
“He led with compassion in a world ruled by noise and power,” Obi said on X, reflecting on their three personal meetings. “He lifted the poor, embraced the outcast, and called leaders to serve, not dominate.”

Obi urged African leaders to draw inspiration from the Pope’s life and recommit to the values he stood for — justice, peace, and human dignity.
The former Anambra governor’s presence at the Vatican symbolized a shared belief that true leadership transcends power — it is, at its core, a sacred responsibility.
