In an apparent move to address the heat waves and other ecological challenges in the state the Kogi State House of Assembly has appealed to the State Government to adopt global climate change remedial practices.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of Urgent Public Importance raised on the floor of the House by Kabba Bunu State, Hon. Bello Oluwaseyi Victor (APC-Kabba-Bunu) to address the growing apprehension over heat waves being experienced, especially in Lokoja, the state capital.
The Lawmaker urging his members to support the motion noted that Kogi State being a host to the two great Rivers Benue and Niger was in weather dilemma as a result of the heat generated by the rivers saying that the motion was long overdue.
“1 rise to bring attention to the pressing issue of ecological challenges in Kogi State, particularly in Lokoja.
“The city’s high temperatures, exacerbated by its rocky terrain and limited green spaces, pose significant health risks to residents, especially the elderly and young children.
“As we are aware, the Nigerian Constitution, Section 20, emphasizes the importance of protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development as stated in the
Section 20, Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (As Amended) emphasized the importance of protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development.
He noted that Kogi State Government has demonstrated its commitment to addressing environmental concerns through initiatives like tree planting program in a bid to address the ecological issues in Lokoja.
He urged the state government to Increase Green Spaces by mandating relevant Ministries and Agencies, such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Kogi Agricultural Development Project, to plant more trees and shrubs in parks, streets, and open areas.
He also tasked the state government on Implementing Sustainable Practices by directing the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to utilize water features, green roofs, and rainwater harvesting systems to reduce high temperatures and improve air quality.
It was also suggested that government promote Community engagement by educating residents about the benefits of planting trees, implementing energy-efficient practices, and raising awareness about heat-related health risks through community-led initiatives and campaigns.
Hon. Bin Ebaiya Shehu Tijani (APC-Lokoja 1) seconded the motion and was supported by Jibrin Abu (PC-Ajaokuta), along with other members who, in their contributions, agreed that the motion was timely.
Speaker of the House, Aliyu Umar Yusuf in his ruling, aligned with the motion noted that the original plan of Lokoja city had been distorted due to indiscriminate felling of trees which he believes must have contributed to the rising temperature.
He adopted the motion following overwhelming voice support from members. (Ends)
