Stakeholders (Elders) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called for the restoration of the party’s National Chairmanship position to the North Central Zone, following the exit of Senator Iyorchia Ayu. The call, made during a meeting in Abuja on December 17, 2024, was part of a broader review of the party’s current state and leadership structure.

The stakeholders emphasized that the PDP constitution clearly outlines that vacancies in party leadership should be filled through appointments from the corresponding zone, as stipulated in Section 47(6) of the constitution.
They urged the party leadership to act swiftly to restore unity and cohesion within the party, stressing the importance of making necessary sacrifices and compromises to rebuild confidence among members.

“The leadership needs to rise to the occasion and restore goodwill in the party,” the communique stated. “We must make necessary sacrifices to ensure the PDP remains a unified platform for good governance in Nigeria.”

In light of the ongoing situation, the North Central Zone stakeholders appealed to their counterparts in other Northern regions to support the return of the National Chairmanship position to the North Central Zone, in line with the party’s constitutional framework.

The stakeholders further highlighted the need to build a broad consensus across the party, with the goal of ensuring the North Central Zone is given the opportunity to serve out the remainder of the chairmanship tenure.

The communique concluded with a message of unity, with North Central stakeholders reaffirming their commitment to preserving the PDP as a strong force for governance in the country.
