Seeks international backing for democratic rights, raises alarm over economic hardship and governance
Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has taken his campaign for democratic accountability and electoral credibility to European Union ambassadors, urging them to support Nigerians’ right to freely choose their leaders in 2027.
Obi made the appeal on Thursday, November 5, 2026, during a meeting with ambassadors of EU member countries in Abuja, where he presented concerns about Nigeria’s economic and political conditions.

The former Anambra State governor said discussions centred on the worsening cost of living, citizens’ welfare, governance and the need to protect the integrity of the forthcoming general elections.

He urged the international community to pay attention to developments in Nigeria and support efforts to ensure that the 2027 elections reflect the genuine choices of voters.
Obi maintained that citizens must be free to decide who governs them without interference, stressing that respect for democratic rights is fundamental to a credible electoral process.
The meeting followed his November 5 engagement with the British High Commissioner, indicating a series of diplomatic consultations on Nigeria’s governance, economic challenges and democratic future.
Obi expressed appreciation to the European Commission for providing the opportunity to engage EU representatives on issues affecting Nigeria and its citizens.
His latest engagement comes as political parties step up preparations for the 2027 elections, with the NDC candidate placing democratic accountability, economic welfare and electoral credibility at the centre of his public engagements.
Obi is seeking the presidency under the NDC platform, whose slogan is “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
