Obi, Dickson Celebrate Ijaw Heritage, Promise Agge Seaport Development

The proposed Agge Seaport project has emerged as a major economic promise in the 2027 political engagement of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with presidential candidate Peter Obi and National Leader Senator Henry Seriake Dickson pledging to pursue its implementation if the party wins the election.
Dickson gave the assurance during his homecoming activities in Bayelsa State, where he and Obi also joined a colourful traditional boat regatta celebrating the cultural heritage of the Ijaw people.
The cultural display took place on Friday at Toru-Orua, Dickson’s hometown in Sagbama Local Government Area, attracting traditional warriors, community leaders and political stakeholders.
Obi and Dickson joined the procession on the waterways as decorated boats and traditional performers showcased the history, identity and maritime traditions of the Ijaw nation.
The regatta, according to a statement by Gabriel Ukuta, Coordinator of Ofurumapepe Media, reflected the longstanding relationship between the Ijaw people and their waterways, which remain central to their livelihoods, culture and history.
Beyond the cultural celebration, Dickson used a stakeholders’ rally in Yenagoa to place Bayelsa’s infrastructure and economic development on the NDC’s 2027 agenda.
He specifically identified the proposed Agge Seaport as a project that could open new economic opportunities for the state and strengthen its position in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
“When Peter Obi becomes President, I will work with him to see that the Agge Seaport project is executed,” Dickson declared.
The former Bayelsa governor also promised that the party would unveil its development blueprint for the state when it returns for its official election campaigns.
“When we are back for the official campaigns, we will unveil the NDC plans for Bayelsa State,” he said.
Dickson urged Bayelsans to support Obi and other NDC candidates in the 2027 elections, expressing confidence that the party’s proposed policies would address the development needs of the state.
The Agge Seaport commitment gives the NDC an opportunity to connect its campaign message with longstanding demands for infrastructure, investment and economic diversification in the Niger Delta.
However, the project’s eventual implementation will depend on the necessary government approvals, financing and practical execution arrangements.
For Obi and Dickson, the Bayelsa engagement combined cultural identity with a political promise centred on economic transformation.
Dickson ended his appeal with a declaration of the party’s national message: “Nigeria must be OK.”
