NDC wins court battle, secures protection for its two-finger logo

The Nigeria Democratic Congress(NDC) has secured a court order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) from interfering with its use of the party’s modified “two-finger” logo ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Federal High Court in Abuja, in a judgment delivered by Justice J.O. Abdulmalik, ordered INEC to approve the NDC’s digitally designed logo and use it for all elections conducted by the commission.
The ruling followed a legal battle between the party and INEC over the logo, after the commission allegedly removed the NDC’s modified symbol from its system and restored an older association logo.
The NDC said its National Executive Committee approved the modified logo on March 25, 2026, before forwarding it to INEC.
According to the party, INEC initially uploaded the new logo but later removed it without giving any valid explanation.
The development forced the NDC to abandon administrative efforts to resolve the dispute and seek judicial intervention.
The court subsequently granted the party’s prayers, directing INEC to recognise the logo, its colours and the two-finger victory symbol as the NDC’s official identity.
The court further issued a perpetual injunction preventing INEC, its officials, agents or servants from stopping or interfering with the party’s use of the logo.
The ruling comes as political parties and their candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, making the recognition of party symbols a key electoral issue.
Reacting to the judgment, the NDC directed its candidates and members to immediately adopt the approved logo on campaign banners, posters and other publicity materials.
The party also appealed to members who had already printed materials bearing the old logo, saying it regretted the inconvenience.
The NDC said it would embark on wider sensitisation to ensure that its candidates and supporters use only the court-approved symbol.
