Former Political Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and APC chieftain, Prof. Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali, has raised the alarm over the increasing deaths of journalists in the Federal Capital Territory and across Nigeria.
Alkali made the call while mourning the death of former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council, Comrade Patrick Osertin Osambedwan.
In a statement issued to journalists, Alkali described Osadewan’s death as a major loss to the journalism profession and the nation, praising his commitment to truth, accountability and public service.
He described the deceased as a consummate media professional, trusted friend and journalist whose strong ethical values earned him respect across different sectors.
According to Alkali, Osambedwan belonged to a generation of journalists who regarded journalism as a noble profession and remained committed to truth, public enlightenment and professional ethics.
He said Osambedwan was also known for his insightful contributions to national issues and his willingness to support fellow journalists.
“Patrick was more than a journalist; he was a trusted friend whose ethical standards and commitment to professional excellence earned him widespread respect,” Alkali said.
The former presidential adviser, however, said Osambedwan’s death should prompt renewed attention to the welfare and healthcare of journalists, particularly in the FCT.
He expressed concern over what he described as the alarming increase in journalist fatalities, stressing that media professionals often make significant sacrifices while serving the public.
“As we mourn Patrick’s departure, we must also celebrate his remarkable life devoted to integrity and professional excellence,” he said.
Alkali extended his condolences to Osambedwan’s family, members of the NUJ FCT Council, his colleagues in the media and all those who knew him.
He prayed for the forgiveness of the deceased’s shortcomings and eternal peace for his soul, urging stakeholders to honour his legacy by providing greater support and protection for journalists.
