Kano residents reject alleged ₦10m bribe, Expose Suspected Drug Operation

Residents of Bajallabe community in Kano have demonstrated how community vigilance can support the fight against drug trafficking after reportedly rejecting an alleged ₦10 million inducement and alerting security agencies to a suspicious vehicle.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday around the FCE Gate 1 axis of Kano metropolis, where residents reportedly noticed a Golf vehicle parked near a residential building alongside a motorcycle.
The vehicle was allegedly carrying substances suspected to be illicit drugs.
According to a statement by Lamara Garba, member of the media and Publicity of the Multi Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Substances in Kano State, residents approached the driver to ask questions about the vehicle and its contents.
The Task Force alleged that the driver then offered ₦10 million to community representatives and vigilante personnel to prevent the matter from being reported.
The offer was reportedly rejected.
Instead, the chairman of the local vigilante group contacted the Multi Agency Task Force and alerted the Nigeria Police Force, Rijiyar Zaki Division, after tension began to build at the scene.
Police officers subsequently arrived and took custody of the vehicle and the individuals involved before moving them to the Rijiyar Zaki Police Division for investigation.
The Task Force said its operatives were also at the scene and were working with the police and other relevant agencies to establish what happened.
Task Force praises residents
The Chairman of the Multi Agency Task Force, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, commended the residents for refusing to compromise the investigation.
He described their action as a demonstration of vigilance and civic responsibility, saying communities have an important role in identifying and reporting suspicious activities.
The Task Force cautioned, however, that the substances recovered from the vehicle are only suspected illicit drugs. Their exact nature and status will be determined through investigation and, where necessary, laboratory analysis.
The agency also praised the police for responding promptly and urged residents to report suspected criminal activities instead of confronting suspects or taking the law into their own hands.
Property may be sealed
The Task Force said the property where the suspected substances were discovered would be sealed in line with an Executive Order recently signed by the Kano State Government.
It said further action would depend on the outcome of investigations and applicable legal procedures.
The agency urged residents, traditional and religious leaders, youth organisations, market associations and vigilante groups to strengthen cooperation with security agencies.
The Bajallabe incident, it said, underscores the importance of community participation in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse.
