FUD Student Develops AI System That Detects Fire Early

A final-year student of the Department of Physics, Federal University Dutse (FUD), Daha Muhammad Albakari, has developed an Artificial Intelligence-powered fire detection and prevention system.
The system, called AI FIRE SYSTEM, is designed to detect fire and smoke early and help prevent small incidents from becoming major disasters.
Albakari said the system uses artificial intelligence, computer vision, Internet of Things (IoT) technology and environmental sensors to monitor possible fire risks in real time.
Unlike traditional fire alarms that mainly depend on smoke or heat sensors, the AI FIRE SYSTEM can analyse images, temperature and gas levels to identify possible fire hazards.
He said traditional alarms can sometimes give false alerts because of cooking smoke, steam or dust.
Albakari said he developed the system because of the need for an affordable and locally made fire safety solution that can provide early warnings.
The system uses an ESP32-CAM to capture images, while sensors monitor temperature and gas concentration. An AI model then analyses the information and identifies whether the situation is normal, involves smoke or indicates fire.
When a danger is detected, the system activates an alarm and can send alerts through Wi-Fi or GSM networks.
According to Albakari, the system can be used in homes, schools, hospitals, offices, markets, hotels, warehouses, factories, filling stations and other high-risk areas.
He said the project could help make smart fire safety more affordable and accessible in Nigeria.
The university said the innovation supports the Vice-Chancellor’s 11-Point Agenda and reflects FUD’s commitment to research and innovation.
It added that the project could further raise the university’s profile in academic excellence and technological development.
