  • >ters Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has described the reported decision by the European Union (EU) to withdraw its full-scale election observation mission from Nigeria’s 2027 general elections as a bad omen and a wake-up call over the country’s worsening insecurity.

HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intensify the fight against terrorism, banditry and insurgency to create a secure environment for the 2027 elections.

The group said terrorists must not be allowed to determine where Nigerians can campaign, travel or vote.

HURIWA commended the Chief of Army Staff for recent operational gains against terrorists, urging him to sustain the momentum.

It also called on all service chiefs to develop a stronger joint strategy involving the Army, Air Force, Navy, Police and intelligence agencies, with emphasis on intelligence sharing and dismantling terrorist financing, recruitment and logistics networks.

The group urged the Federal Government to treat the EU’s reported decision as a serious warning, particularly the allegation that EU observers faced hostility after their 2023 election report.

HURIWA said international observers must be allowed to work freely and safely, stressing that criticism of elections should strengthen, rather than undermine, democratic institutions.

The organisation further demanded immediate steps to secure political campaigns, INEC personnel and facilities, journalists, observers and voters ahead of 2027.

“Nigeria must not allow terrorists to become the invisible election observers of 2027 by determining where citizens can vote, where candidates can campaign and where observers can go,” HURIWA warned.
