National Chairman of the Labour Party(LP), Senator Nenadi Usman, has urged Nigeria’s political leaders to rise above bitterness and embrace patriotism, tolerance and issue-based politics as the country inches toward the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the 80th birthday celebration of former Plateau State Governor and ex-Governor of old Benue State, Senator Jonah David Jang, in Jos on Friday, Usman said the nation’s future would depend on the willingness of the political class to place national interest above personal ambition and partisan rivalry.
She cautioned against politics of hatred and division, stressing that while political competition is fundamental to democracy, it must never undermine national cohesion or threaten the country’s unity.
“The next election should not be a battle against fellow Nigerians. It should be a contest of ideas, competence and character. When elections are over, we must all return to the same Nigeria. That is why patriotism must always be greater than politics,” she said.
The Labour Party chairman said Nigerians deserve leaders who unite the country rather than deepen existing divisions, urging political actors to build bridges across ethnic, religious and partisan lines.
“Our political parties may be different, but our country is one. We owe future generations the responsibility of conducting politics without destroying the bonds that hold our nation together,” she added.
Usman also called for greater civility in the nation’s political space, urging politicians and their supporters to shun inflammatory rhetoric and embrace dialogue, mutual respect and peaceful engagement.
According to her, democratic growth thrives where there is tolerance, respect for opposing views and a commitment to peaceful coexistence.
She further described Senator Jang as a distinguished statesman whose decades of service in the military and democratic governance have left an enduring mark on Nigeria’s political history.
The Labour Party chairman said Jang’s life exemplifies discipline, courage and selfless service, noting that his contributions as a military officer, former governor and senator remain worthy of celebration.
“At 80, Senator Jonah Jang represents a generation of leaders whose lives remind us that public office is ultimately about service, honour and legacy. We celebrate not only his longevity but also his enduring contributions to nation-building,” she said.
Usman prayed for God’s continued grace, good health and strength for the elder statesman as he marks his milestone birthday.
