The National Leader of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dr. Chike Okogwu, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to concentrate on tackling Nigeria’s deepening economic and security challenges, saying governance should take precedence over political engagements.
Reacting to the President’s recent comments on political competition, Okogwu said millions of Nigerians were more concerned about the worsening economic situation than political rhetoric.
He noted that soaring inflation, persistent unemployment, rising insecurity and the increasing cost of living have continued to erode the standard of living, calling for urgent and people-centred policies to reverse the trend.
The ADC stalwart also drew attention to the plight of Persons with Disabilities, lamenting that many still face discrimination and inadequate access to healthcare, education, transportation, employment and other essential public services.
He called on the Federal Government and sub-national governments to fully enforce the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, insisting that its implementation is critical to guaranteeing equal rights, dignity and opportunities for millions of Nigerians living with disabilities.
Okogwu reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to policies that promote inclusive governance, accessible infrastructure, quality education, affordable healthcare, job creation and greater participation of Persons with Disabilities in public life and decision-making.
He maintained that the success of any administration would ultimately be measured by its ability to improve citizens’ welfare, strengthen democratic institutions and foster national unity.
“The hallmark of true leadership is not political grandstanding but the capacity to improve lives, protect the vulnerable and build a nation where every citizen, regardless of physical ability, has an equal opportunity to succeed,” he said
