A new chapter in Nigeria–United States collaboration has begun following the formal launch of a strategic partnership between the City of East Orange, New Jersey, and the Ugwumba Center in Imo State, Nigeria.
The landmark initiative, which will be coordinated by the Ugwumba Center for Leadership, is designed to promote leadership development, human capacity building and sustainable socio-economic progress through cross-border collaboration.
The partnership was unveiled during a high-level meeting in East Orange, where the Mayor of the city, Ted Green, received the President of the Ugwumba Center, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, and his delegation.
In recognition of his contributions to leadership and human capital development, Ugwumba was presented with the City of East Orange Award for Outstanding Leadership and Human Capacity Development. He was also decorated with the official City Pin by Mayor Green, symbolising the city’s appreciation of his efforts in advancing leadership and community development.
Speaking after receiving the honour, Ugwumba described the recognition as a tribute to the collective efforts of everyone committed to building stronger institutions and empowering communities.
He said the partnership would create new opportunities for leadership training, knowledge exchange, youth empowerment and sustainable development between Nigeria and the United States.
According to him, the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to investing in people and strengthening institutions capable of driving long-term economic and social transformation.
“I am deeply humbled by this recognition and grateful to Mayor Ted Green and the people of East Orange for the warm reception and confidence reposed in our vision. This partnership is about building bridges that will create lasting opportunities and strengthen the future of our communities,” he said.
Ugwumba also expressed appreciation to members of his delegation, including Engr. Kings Umege, Hon. Chief Sir Engr. Ewhoma Tony Okpokparoro (Oilmoney), Prince Anozie Ugenyi and Engr. Kizito Umege, for their support and commitment to the initiative.
Observers say the partnership has the potential to deepen people-to-people diplomacy, encourage institutional cooperation and open new avenues for investment in leadership development, education and capacity building between both communities.
The initiative is expected to serve as a platform for fostering innovation, promoting cultural exchange and strengthening mutually beneficial relations between Nigeria and the United States.
