The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, and personnel of the Nigerian Army for recent counter-terrorism successes, urging the military to sustain joint operations and uphold professionalism in the ongoing fight against insecurity.
In a statement issued on Monday by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, the civil rights organisation particularly praised troops of Operation HADIN KAI and the Nigeria Police Mobile Force (MOPOL) for thwarting an attempted mass abduction at the Federal Government Girls College, Monguno, Borno State, where 46 students were rescued from suspected ISWAP terrorists.
HURIWA described the operation as a demonstration of the effectiveness of intelligence-led and inter-agency collaboration in tackling terrorism and protecting vulnerable communities.
While mourning those who lost their lives during the attack, the association extended condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with the injured students, calling on the Federal Government to strengthen security around schools and other public institutions.
The group also applauded recent military operations, including the reported neutralisation of suspected ISWAP fighters near the University of Maiduguri, the rescue of additional abductees in Gwoza—bringing the number of victims freed through the Gwoza East Corridor to over 100—and the arrest of a suspected terrorist in Katsina State.
According to HURIWA, the recent operations underscore the growing impact of sustained military pressure on terrorist groups and reflect improvements in operational coordination among security agencies.
The organisation further praised the Chief of Army Staff for promoting indigenous military innovation, enhanced troop training, improved combat support capabilities and stronger collaboration among the Armed Forces and other security agencies.
It noted that previous gains recorded under Operation HADIN KAI, including the elimination of terrorist commanders, destruction of insurgents’ logistics bases, rescue of kidnapped victims and disruption of criminal supply routes, demonstrate the effectiveness of sustained offensive operations backed by actionable intelligence.
HURIWA urged the military to deepen collaboration with the Nigeria Police, intelligence agencies, local security structures and other stakeholders, describing joint operations as critical to Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy.
The group also called on military personnel to continue observing the highest standards of professionalism, respect for human rights, the Rules of Engagement and the Law of Armed Conflict, stressing that adherence to legal and constitutional safeguards enhances public confidence in security operations.
Expressing confidence in the Armed Forces, HURIWA said the recent successes should encourage security agencies to intensify efforts against terrorist groups until lasting peace is restored across the country.
The organisation reaffirmed its support for lawful, professional and effective security operations aimed at safeguarding lives and protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
