The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has stepped up preparations for the 2027 general elections, unveiling a fresh agenda focused on internal reforms, grassroots mobilisation and organisational restructuring aimed at positioning the party as a formidable electoral force.
The resolve emerged at the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, where leaders reviewed progress made since assuming office and adopted measures to strengthen the party’s structures across the country.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, SDP National Chairman, Professor Sadiq Gombe, said the party had recorded notable achievements within the last four months, including the successful conduct of two NEC meetings, its National Convention and primary elections, alongside efforts to consolidate party structures nationwide.

He said the party remained committed to internal democracy, transparency and the rule of law, while commending the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its cooperation.
Gombe dismissed reports of internal divisions, insisting that the SDP remains united and has no faction, stressing that disciplinary actions taken against some former officials were in line with the party’s constitution and established procedures.
He urged members to intensify grassroots mobilisation and remain focused on building a stronger political platform capable of competing effectively in the 2027 polls.
National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, disclosed that the NEC approved additional reforms to improve the party’s administrative efficiency and accountability.
According to him, the SDP has updated its constitution, strengthened its membership register and introduced new operational procedures designed to enhance internal governance.
He added that the next phase of reforms would concentrate on establishing functional party structures at the polling-unit level and training polling agents to improve electoral performance.
Also speaking, Vice National Chairman (South), Senator Ugochukwu Uba, called on members to work in unity, saying the party’s manifesto remains anchored on improving the welfare, security and economic well-being of Nigerians.
In his goodwill message, Solomon Akwashiki expressed confidence that the SDP would significantly improve its electoral fortunes in 2027 by securing more elective positions across the country.
Chairman of the SDP State Chairmen Forum, Femi Olaniyi, urged leaders to strengthen party structures from the state to the ward level while encouraging continuous voter registration, Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection and sustained membership drives.
The party’s National Woman Leader, Saadatu Abdullahi, also advocated greater inclusion of women in leadership and decision-making, reiterating her proposal for state and zonal women leaders to be incorporated into the National Executive Committee.
The NEC meeting concluded with a renewed pledge by party leaders to deepen internal reforms, consolidate grassroots structures and intensify mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
