The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called for greater transparency from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its handling of judicial pronouncements affecting the leadership structure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a statement issued in Abuja, the rights group said INEC must clarify its position on court decisions that have raised legal questions about the party’s internal leadership arrangements and compliance with constitutional provisions.
HURIWA expressed concern over what it described as uncertainty surrounding the Commission’s response to multiple judicial findings linked to ongoing disputes within the PDP.

The group specifically questioned whether INEC has taken steps to fully assess and implement the legal implications of relevant court rulings, particularly those touching on leadership validity and party administration.
According to the association, INEC is constitutionally required to act in strict adherence to court decisions, especially in matters involving the regulation and recognition of political parties.
It warned that any perception of selective compliance with judicial rulings could undermine public confidence in the electoral body and weaken trust in democratic institutions.
HURIWA further urged INEC to publicly explain the basis for its current position on the PDP leadership structure and to demonstrate that all decisions are guided solely by law and judicial authority.
The rights organisation stressed that respect for court judgments remains fundamental to the rule of law and democratic stability, adding that electoral bodies must avoid actions that could be interpreted as political bias.
It called on the Commission to provide clear communication to Nigerians on the matter, insisting that transparency is essential to maintaining institutional credibility ahead of future elections.
HURIWA maintained that Nigeria’s democracy depends on the consistent enforcement of judicial decisions and the neutrality of key institutions such as INEC.
