Former Abia State governor and senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has thrown his weight behind legislative efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s judiciary, while also reaffirming his commitment to youth empowerment and transparency in regional development initiatives.
Speaking during Senate deliberations on two judicial reform bills, Kalu supported proposals seeking to increase the number of judges in the Federal High Court and justices in the Court of Appeal, arguing that expanding the judiciary would help reduce case backlogs and accelerate access to justice.
According to him, delays in the justice system undermine public confidence and weaken democratic institutions, stressing that a more robust judiciary is essential for national development and the rule of law.
Beyond legislative matters, Kalu highlighted ongoing efforts to create educational and professional opportunities for young people in Abia North. He revealed that three constituents are currently participating in an advanced training programme on green finance and financial supervision in China, aimed at equipping them with skills relevant to sustainable economic development.
The lawmaker noted that several other youths from the district have also benefited from international scholarship opportunities and capacity-building programmes facilitated through his interventions, describing human capital development as a critical driver of long-term prosperity.
Kalu also presided over an oversight session of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission, where the commission’s leadership was asked to provide detailed records on finances, procurement processes, projects, staffing, and budget implementation.
He stressed that accountability and prudent management of public resources must remain central to the commission’s operations, insisting that citizens deserve transparency in the use of funds earmarked for regional development.
The senator maintained that strong institutions, empowered youths, and transparent governance are interconnected pillars of sustainable growth, pledging to continue supporting reforms that strengthen public trust and deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians.
