Former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, is on the verge of rejoining the All Progressives Congress (APC) following a series of strategic consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sources indicate that Shekarau, a former Minister of Education and current member of the PDP Board of Trustees, has held separate closed-door meetings with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The meeting with Tinubu reportedly took place in Lagos during the Easter period, where discussions centered on strengthening the APC’s foothold in Kano—one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states.
In a related development, Governor Yusuf, alongside key APC figures, visited Shekarau at his Kano residence in what observers describe as a calculated move to bring the influential politician back into the ruling party’s fold.
The renewed political courtship comes amid shifting alliances in Kano. Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, had earlier engaged Shekarau in a bid to align forces under the opposition ADC. However, that effort appears to have stalled.
Kwankwaso has instead secured the backing of Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, a former APC governorship candidate and Shekarau ally, who has since defected to the ADC.
Kano’s political landscape has witnessed rapid changes in recent months, particularly following Governor Yusuf’s controversial exit from the NNPP to join the APC—mirroring a pattern of strategic defections that has long defined the state’s politics.
Shekarau, who once left the APC after internal power struggles involving Kwankwaso, later reunited with him in 2022 under the PDP umbrella. That alliance, however, collapsed over disagreements on power sharing.
Despite confirming the recent high-profile meetings, Shekarau’s spokesperson, Sule Yau Sule, said consultations are ongoing and a final decision will be announced in due course.
If confirmed, Shekarau’s return to the APC could significantly reshape Kano’s political equation and further intensify realignments ahead of 2027.
