Former Senator representing Jigawa South-East, Sabo Muhammad Nakudu, has defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Jigawa State.
Nakudu, a prominent APC figure in the state, made the announcement during a political gathering where he formally unveiled his new platform and political ambition.
Explaining his decision, the former lawmaker said the move followed “deep reflection and wide consultations” with his supporters, expressing confidence in the ADC’s ability to provide purposeful leadership.
“We believe the ADC offers a credible platform to actualise our vision for a better Jigawa State,” he stated.
He added that his defection is part of a broader effort to build a more responsive political structure driven by grassroots mobilisation and sustainable democratic values.
Nakudu’s move marks a significant shift in Jigawa’s political landscape, given his long-standing influence within the APC. He previously sought the party’s governorship ticket but lost in the primaries to incumbent governor, Umar Namadi.
With his defection, the ADC is expected to gain momentum in the state as opposition forces continue to realign ahead of the 2027 elections.
Nakudu represented Birnin Kudu/Buji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2015 before serving in the Senate between 2015 and 2023.
His entry into the ADC governorship race is likely to reshape political calculations in Jigawa, setting the stage for a more competitive contest in the next election cycle.
