The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has petitioned the United States Government, calling for targeted sanctions against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over allegations of actions it says threaten democratic governance in Nigeria.
In a formal communication to the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the group raised concerns over what it described as a pattern of electoral misconduct, political interference, and erosion of judicial independence. It warned that shrinking political space, suppression of dissent, and alleged manipulation of party structures could weaken Nigeria’s democratic foundations.
HURIWA urged U.S. authorities to review the allegations and consider measures such as visa restrictions if found credible, arguing that Nigeria’s democratic stability has broader implications for regional and global governance.
The petition references events during Wike’s tenure as Governor of Rivers State between 2015 and 2023, citing claims of electoral irregularities, intimidation of opposition figures, and undue influence in political processes. It also pointed to ongoing political tensions in the state involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara, alleging continued influence by the former governor.
The group further accused Wike of contributing to internal divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that such developments could undermine political pluralism ahead of future elections.
On judicial matters, HURIWA referenced public commentary by legal experts, including Chidi Odinkalu, raising concerns about perceived political influence in court decisions, and called for vigilance in protecting judicial independence.
The organisation also cited recent backlash over comments made by Wike during a television interview, which drew criticism from media stakeholders, including the Independent Broadcast Association of Nigeria (IBAN), over concerns about press freedom and rhetoric from public officials.
HURIWA criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it described as insufficient response to the situation, warning that perceived inaction could embolden actions that weaken democratic accountability.
While acknowledging Nigeria’s strategic ties with the United States, the group maintained that its appeal is aimed at encouraging principled diplomatic engagement in defence of democratic values—not external interference.
It stressed that Nigeria’s stability remains critical to Africa and beyond, warning that any democratic decline could have far-reaching consequences.
HURIWA said it stands ready to provide additional information to support any review by U.S. authorities.
