A major political shift may be unfolding in Kano State following the resignation of former deputy governor and 2023 governorship candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gawuna formally announced his exit from the ruling party in a letter dated March 29, 2026, addressed to the APC chairman in Gawuna Ward, Nassarawa Local Government Area. He described the decision as “voluntary and personal,” marking the end of his long-standing association with the party.
“I hereby formally resign my membership from the APC, effective March 29, 2026,” the letter stated.
Despite his departure, Gawuna expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities it afforded him, particularly during his rise within its ranks and his emergence as the APC governorship candidate in the 2023 elections.
His resignation comes at a time of heightened political maneuvering in Kano, as key actors begin to reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. The development has already triggered speculation about his next political move.
Multiple sources indicate that Gawuna is set to meet with former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his Miller Road residence. The meeting is widely seen as a strategic engagement that could signal Gawuna’s alignment with the influential Kwankwasiyya movement.
Kwankwaso, a dominant figure in Kano politics, commands a strong grassroots following, and any alliance between him and Gawuna could significantly reshape the state’s political landscape.
Observers note that Gawuna remains a formidable force, having secured a substantial share of votes in the 2023 governorship election. His potential defection to a rival political bloc may alter existing power dynamics and intensify competition ahead of the next electoral cycle.
As political realignments gather momentum, attention now turns to the outcome of his meeting with Kwankwaso and what it could mean for the future of party politics in Kano
