HURIWA Honours BPP DG Adedokun with 2026 Good Governance Award

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has named the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), Adebowale Adedokun, as the recipient of its 2026 Human Rights Award in the Good Governance category.
The civil rights organisation said the decision followed what it described as an overwhelming and unanimous endorsement by more than 12,000 members of the association across the world, who cited Adedokun’s record of promoting transparency, accountability and institutional reforms in Nigeria’s public procurement system.
In a statement issued in Abuja, HURIWA said Adedokun emerged unopposed during the internal nomination process after members highlighted his decades of professional service and commitment to strengthening integrity in the management of public funds.
According to the group, since his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement, Adedokun has pursued reforms aimed at repositioning the agency through digital transformation, improved transparency, institutional efficiency and strict adherence to due process in government procurement.
HURIWA noted that Adedokun’s career spans more than two decades in procurement reforms, policy development and institutional capacity building, describing him as a technocrat with deep knowledge of Nigeria’s procurement framework.
The association also highlighted his previous role within the Bureau as Director of Research, Training and Strategic Planning, which it said equipped him with the expertise required to drive sustainable reforms in the procurement sector.
The rights group further cited Adedokun’s work as a national consultant on procurement reforms for the United Nations Development Programme, his participation in international research on public procurement, and his role as a resource person for the World Bank on sustainable procurement practices.
It added that he has contributed significantly to professional capacity development within the sector, having trained more than 4,000 procurement officers across federal and state government institutions, thereby strengthening compliance with procurement regulations and international standards.
HURIWA also commended Adedokun’s involvement in international development programmes, including his role as focal point officer for the UN Women initiative on women’s empowerment in procurement and his coordination of the SPESSE–World Bank project aimed at deepening expertise in procurement and public financial management.
The group said Adedokun’s reform agenda at the Bureau, particularly his push for electronic procurement systems, data-driven monitoring and transparent bidding frameworks, aligns with the principles of accountability and good governance.
It added that his policy direction encouraging open competition in public contracting, strengthened regulatory oversight, promotion of local content and the integration of sustainability principles in procurement decisions reflects a broader commitment to ensuring value for money in the use of public resources.
HURIWA disclosed that the award will be formally presented during its 2026 National Human Rights Lecture scheduled for June 24, 2026, marking the 18th edition of the annual event organised by the association.
According to the organisation, the lecture will bring together academics, human rights advocates, lawmakers and senior government officials to deliberate on governance, accountability and the protection of civil liberties in Nigeria.
HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the annual awards remain an important platform for recognising leaders whose actions promote democratic governance and strengthen respect for the rule of law.
He added that Adedokun’s unanimous nomination reflects the confidence of the association’s global membership in his leadership and reform-driven approach at the Bureau of Public Procurement.
The organisation congratulated the BPP Director-General and urged him to sustain the reform momentum aimed at building a transparent, efficient and globally respected procurement system in Nigeria.
