Some women’s groups under the umbrella of the Jigawa Women Development Initiative staged a peaceful protest at the entrance of the Jigawa State Government House, calling for justice for Walida Abdullahi, a minor allegedly abducted from Jigawa to Abuja and sexually abused, resulting in the birth of a baby girl.
The protesters, who carried placards highlighting the plight of the victim, urged swift prosecution of the suspect, identified as Ifeanyi Festus Onyewuenyi.
Addressing the crowd, Aisha Shamsuddeen, leader of the women’s groups, said the demonstration was meant to express solidarity with Walida and her family over what she described as an inhumane act. She also commended the intervention of Governor Umar Namadi, describing his response as that of a responsible leader and father.
“The rescue of the girl and her baby, now under the custody of the Jigawa State Government, reflects the governor’s commitment to protecting the dignity, welfare, and rights of citizens,” Shamsuddeen said. She further called on the public to support the government in ensuring that justice is served in this matter.
In a related development, Governor Namadi met with the victim’s parents and legal representatives at the Government House in Dutse, providing updates on her condition. According to a statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, Walida is currently receiving medical care and undergoing rehabilitation at the expense of the state government.
The statement added that Walida will be reunited with her family once her rehabilitation is complete, and the governor reiterated the state’s commitment to her full recovery, continued education, and overall welfare.
Walida was allegedly abducted by Ifeanyi Festus Onyewuenyi, reportedly a staff member of the Department of State Services (DSS), in a case that has drawn widespread attention and condemnation.
