The Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Dutse (FUD), Professor Ahmad Muhammed Gumel, has announced an ambitious plan to expand student accommodation and upgrade sporting infrastructure in response to the institution’s growing enrolment.
In an interview with FUDNewsletter, Professor Gumel explained that the steady rise in student numbers has placed pressure on existing facilities, making expansion both urgent and necessary. According to him, providing adequate housing and modern recreational spaces is central to enhancing the overall student experience.
He commended his predecessor, AbdulKarim Sabo Mohammed, for laying a solid foundation through the construction of four female hostels, two of which have already been completed. Building on that progress, the current administration plans to construct additional male hostels to bridge the accommodation gap.
On sports development, the Vice-Chancellor noted that current facilities can no longer meet the demands of the student population. He disclosed that the university will develop new volleyball, badminton, and basketball courts, as well as standard football pitches, to promote physical fitness and encourage wider student participation in sports.
Beyond accommodation and sports, Professor Gumel outlined a broader infrastructure drive that includes the construction of more lecture theatres, classrooms, and public conveniences. He described these projects as part of a holistic approach to strengthening academic delivery and campus life.
The Vice-Chancellor also pledged to boost student-focused support initiatives by reinforcing the Students Benevolent Fund and expanding the work-study programme. He added that entrepreneurship training would be deepened to equip students with practical skills and enhance their post-graduation prospects.
Reaffirming his commitment to a student-centred administration, Professor Gumel urged students to channel their concerns through the Students Union Government and the Office of the Dean of Students Affairs. He assured them of an open-door policy and a leadership style anchored on dialogue, inclusion, and responsiveness.
