A former legal officer at the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Barrister Charles Nkanang, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for redress, recognition, and what he described as the restoration of his dignity following the loss of his job in 2022.
Nkanang alleged that his removal occurred during the tenure of former APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, after he authored and circulated a pro-Tinubu campaign booklet ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, the Akwa Ibom-born lawyer said his ordeal began after he published a book titled “101 Reasons Why Our Party, All Progressives Congress (APC), Should Nominate Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Party Presidential Flag-Bearer.” The publication, he explained, was intended to advocate for Tinubu’s candidacy at a time when internal party contestations were ongoing.
“Before the 2023 election, I believed in Tinubu’s candidacy and defended him as the best pathway for the party,” Nkanang said.
He claimed that barely a month after printing and distributing thousands of copies of the booklet in April 2022, his salary at the APC national secretariat was abruptly stopped. According to him, the action was taken without a formal query, disciplinary process, or official explanation.
“No formal query. No official explanation. No disciplinary hearing,” he stated, describing the move as sudden and unexpected.
Nkanang said the development triggered years of hardship, leaving him without a steady source of income. He recounted a period marked by financial strain, reputational damage, and strained personal relationships.
“I lost everything. Stability slipped away. Financial strain mounted. Relationships suffered. Reputation bruised,” he said, adding that he has faced public ridicule for supporting a cause he believed in.
Despite the circumstances, Nkanang described President Tinubu as compassionate and liberal-minded, expressing hope that the President would look into his case.
“My condition is precarious. I only stood for what I believed was right for our party,” he said.
While seeking possible reinstatement or compensation, the former legal officer stressed that his appeal goes beyond personal relief. He urged party leadership to acknowledge and honour loyal members who, in his view, laboured and made sacrifices that contributed to the party’s electoral success.
He called for what he termed adequate recognition for faithful party members who supported the APC’s rise to power.
