The Governing Council of Salem University Lokoja has approved the reappointment of Prof. Alewo Johnson-Akubo as the Vice-Chancellor of the institution for a second term.
The decision was contained in a statement signed by the Registrar of the university, Dr. Emmanuel Adejoh, and made available to newsmen on Thursday in Lokoja.
According to the statement, the council’s decision was aimed at consolidating on the remarkable gains recorded under Prof. Johnson-Akubo’s leadership, particularly in the areas of academic excellence, infrastructural development, and institutional growth.
The Governing Council noted that the Vice-Chancellor’s strides in policy re-engineering and strategic development have significantly strengthened the foundation of the university, described as the first privately owned university in North Central Nigeria.
It further commended Prof. Johnson-Akubo’s visionary leadership and commitment to repositioning the institution as a competitive centre of learning within Nigeria and the wider West African sub-region.
“The council expressed confidence in his ability and agility to sustain the transformation process and continue steering the university toward greater academic and administrative heights,” the statement read.
The council also congratulated the Vice-Chancellor on his reappointment and prayed for divine grace, wisdom, and understanding as he pilots the affairs of the university in the new term.
Dr. Adejoh disclosed that news of the reappointment was received with widespread jubilation across the university community, including staff, students, and neighbouring residents.
Many members of the academic and non-academic staff reportedly described the decision as well deserved, citing the stability and progress witnessed during Prof. Johnson-Akubo’s first tenure.
Students were equally said to have expressed optimism that the second term would bring further improvements in academic standards, research development, and student welfare.
Observers within the education sector in Kogi State have also lauded the Governing Council’s move, noting that continuity in leadership often enhances institutional stability and long-term planning.
With the renewed mandate, Prof. Johnson-Akubo is expected to consolidate ongoing reforms and implement new initiatives aimed at strengthening the university’s reputation as a citadel of learning committed to excellence, discipline, and innovation.
