The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially halted impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following weeks of legal and political wrangling. The decision was taken during Thursday’s plenary, shortly after a Committee of the Whole session.
Speaker Martin Amaewhule told lawmakers that the move followed a high-level meeting at the Presidential Villa involving President Bola Tinubu, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Governor Fubara, and other stakeholders. As part of the resolution, the governor and his deputy withdrew their ongoing court cases against the Assembly, while the lawmakers agreed to suspend the impeachment process as a mark of respect for the President’s intervention.
Amaewhule confirmed that all lawsuits between the governor, deputy governor, and the Assembly had now been withdrawn. The Deputy Speaker, Dumle Maol, urged members to formally rescind both the impeachment notice and pending legal actions, noting that this was in recognition of the President’s effort to maintain political stability. The House subsequently voted unanimously to halt the proceedings.
The impeachment process, which began in January 2026, was triggered by allegations of gross misconduct, including unconstitutional spending, withholding Assembly funds, and defying a Supreme Court ruling on financial autonomy. However, judicial obstacles and political pressure—including opposition from the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC)—delayed the process.
This marks the third time the Assembly has stepped back from impeaching Fubara and Odu, raising hopes for a lasting political truce between the state’s executive and legislative arms. President Tinubu’s intervention comes after previous attempts at reconciliation, including a state of emergency in 2025 that temporarily suspended the governor, deputy governor, and lawmakers.
Political analysts view this latest development as a crucial step toward stabilizing Rivers State’s government and reducing tensions between key political actors in the region.
