The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential frontrunner and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has described the simultaneous commencement of the Christian Lenten season and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan as a “rare spiritual convergence” capable of inspiring national renewal.
In a message posted on his verified X handle on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, Obi noted that for the first time in many years, Christians and Muslims in Nigeria are beginning their sacred fasting seasons on the same day.
He said the development goes beyond a coincidence of dates, calling it a powerful symbol of shared sacrifice, reflection and unity at a time when the country is grappling with insecurity and economic hardship.
“Today marks a moment of extraordinary spiritual convergence in Nigeria — a nation richly blessed by God with abundant resources, yet long hindered by poor leadership,” Obi wrote. “For the first time in many years, the Christian season of Lent and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begin on the same day.”
The former Labour Party presidential candidate described the alignment as a “Double Fast,” suggesting it represents a divine invitation for Nigerians to transcend religious and ethnic differences and rediscover their shared humanity.
According to him, both Lent and Ramadan are marked by fasting, prayer, thanksgiving and acts of charity — values he said are urgently needed in the country’s current climate.
“As millions of Nigerians — Christians and Muslims alike — abstain from food and drink or commit to days of penance and prayer, we are united in a single purpose: to seek the mercy of the Almighty for the healing of our land,” he stated.
Obi urged citizens to intensify prayers against insecurity and economic hardship, but stressed that prayer must be accompanied by practical action, including compassion for the vulnerable, forgiveness and disciplined leadership.
“Prayer alone is not enough; it must be paired with action,” he said, adding that the season should serve as a spiritual reset for the nation.
He concluded by wishing Christians observing Lent and Muslims marking Ramadan a blessed season, expressing hope that the rare convergence would usher in lasting peace and unity across Nigeria.
“With our prayers and shared resolve, a New Nigeria is Possible,” he said.
