A member of the House of Representatives, Chinedu Ogah, has dismissed allegations of genocide levelled against Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, describing the claims as unfounded, misleading and capable of inflaming tensions.
Ogah, who represents Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency of Ebonyi State, made the remarks during a press conference where he refuted accusations by human rights activist Joy Idam.
Idam had alleged that the governor was committing genocide against the Amasiri community in connection with a protracted land dispute with a neighbouring community, claiming the crisis had led to loss of lives and destruction of property.
However, Ogah maintained that the allegations were not supported by facts on the ground. He argued that Governor Nwifuru has demonstrated strong leadership in tackling insecurity and resolving communal conflicts across the state.
According to him, several communities in Ebonyi had been enmeshed in land disputes for more than two decades prior to the current administration. He said sustained interventions by the governor—working with traditional rulers, security agencies and community stakeholders—have significantly restored peace in affected areas.
“Before the inauguration of this governor, nearly 10 communities were involved in communal clashes. Today, most of these conflicts have been resolved through proactive engagement and people-centred governance,” Ogah stated.
On the situation in Amasiri, the lawmaker disclosed that the governor constituted a panel of inquiry to investigate the dispute and recommend measures for lasting peace. He explained that the curfew earlier imposed in the area was a temporary security measure to prevent further violence and has since been relaxed following improved stability.
Ogah criticised Idam for what he described as limited engagement with developments in the state, insisting that her claims were based on incomplete information.
“It is unfair for anyone who is not on the ground to accuse the governor of genocide. Such statements are false and capable of escalating tension,” he said.
The lawmaker further highlighted key achievements of the Nwifuru administration, including youth empowerment through education, infrastructure development and inclusive governance.
He noted that about 400 Ebonyi youths are currently benefiting from overseas scholarship programmes in the United Kingdom, with beneficiaries drawn from Amasiri and other communities. He also cited ongoing construction of classroom blocks across local government areas and security initiatives aimed at strengthening grassroots peacebuilding through traditional institutions.
Ogah maintained that the governor’s leadership style remains inclusive, accommodating political stakeholders across party lines in the interest of unity and development.
He urged Idam to retract her statements and visit Ebonyi State to assess the situation firsthand, stressing that measures such as curfews and temporary school closures were security responses—not acts of persecution.
“The allegation of genocide is completely false. Governor Nwifuru has worked tirelessly to ensure peace, stability and development in Ebonyi State,” Ogah said.
