Public affairs analyst Clement Abuo has strongly refuted recent claims by Boniface Adie that Hon. Peter Akpanke, member of the House of Representatives for Obudu/Bekwara/Akamkpa (OBA) Federal Constituency, was involved in selling government contracts.
In a statement, Abuo stressed that lawmakers neither own, bid for, nor execute contracts. “
Their role is strictly to nominate constituency projects. Procurement and execution are handled by ministries, departments, and agencies in accordance with the law,” he said.
The analyst questioned the credibility of Adie, who reportedly admitted to giving money to “buy” contracts while simultaneously portraying himself as a victim. “Such contradictions make the allegations implausible and legally baseless,” Abuo said.
Abuo also condemned attempts to link personal tragedies to the accusations, noting that expecting a legislator to cover every constituent’s private hardship is unrealistic.
He highlighted that Hon. Akpanke has gone beyond his constitutional duty by organizing health outreaches and providing financial support for medical needs, reflecting genuine humanitarian concern.
“The attempt to involve Hon. Akpanke’s spouse in a live television broadcast over alleged contracts was a blatant act of sensationalism and public blackmail,” Abuo added.
He further pointed out inconsistencies in Adie’s claims, including the mention of a non-existent aide, “Charlie Emeji,” and contradictory statements about the purpose of the money he allegedly paid. “If the meetings did not involve the Honourable Member directly, impersonation and extortion may have occurred,” Abuo said.
Highlighting the political undertones of the claims, Abuo urged Adie and others to desist from spreading false narratives for personal or political gain. “Hon. Peter Akpanke remains a committed and diligent representative, delivering projects, supporting education, and advocating for the welfare of his constituents,” he said.
Abuo concluded that it is only fair to allow Hon. Akpanke to continue his work uninterrupted, while those spreading baseless claims must be held accountable.
