Former special counsel Jack Smith has accused Donald Trump of orchestrating a “criminal scheme” to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, according to AFP.
Speaking before the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee, Smith said his investigation uncovered evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that Trump attempted to block the lawful transfer of power to Democrat Joe Biden. Smith stressed that the decision to charge Trump was based solely on evidence, not politics. “No one should be above the law,” he told lawmakers.
Trump denied the allegations, calling the cases politically motivated, and criticized the Justice Department for what he claims is bias against him. The prosecutions were eventually dropped after Trump won the 2024 election, following Justice Department policy against prosecuting a sitting president.
Smith’s testimony, AFP reports, follows a closed-door deposition last month where he detailed his team’s investigation. He also referenced other high-profile cases, including those against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, which collapsed over procedural issues with the prosecutors.
The ex-special counsel’s public statements underscore ongoing debates about presidential accountability and the rule of law in the United States.
