The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has paid tribute to the late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, describing him as an extraordinary religious leader whose courage and compassion saved lives and strengthened interfaith harmony.
Imam Abdullahi is credited with rescuing 262 Christians during a violent attack in 2018, an act that came at significant personal risk and highlighted the power of moral bravery over religious differences.
In a statement in Abuja, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh said the Imam’s actions went beyond saving lives, affirming the sanctity of human life and reinforcing hope and unity across communities.
“In a world often divided by suspicion and hatred, the Imam stood as a bridge-builder and a living symbol of what true religion represents,” Okoh said. He added that Abdullahi was honored by CAN during its Sapphire Anniversary celebrations in 2021, and that his legacy will endure as an example for religious leaders and communities alike.
CAN called for continued recognition of the Imam’s heroism, urging public engagement with his family and broader acknowledgement of his sacrifice to inspire unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence in Nigeria.
“As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life well lived in service to God and humanity. His legacy will continue to speak where words fall short,” Archbishop Okoh concluded.
