Court Halts Planned Impeachment of Rivers Governor, Deputy

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyibo has stepped in to temporarily halt moves to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, issuing an interim injunction against the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Chief Judge of the state.
In the ruling, Justice F. A. Fiberesima barred the Speaker of the House, 25 lawmakers, the Clerk of the Assembly, and other parties from taking any further steps toward the impeachment of the governor and his deputy. The court also restrained the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, from acting on any request or communication aimed at setting up an impeachment panel.
The order, granted following separate ex parte applications filed by Governor Fubara and his deputy, specifically prohibits the Chief Judge from receiving or processing impeachment-related documents for a period of seven days.
Justice Fiberesima further authorised substituted service of court papers on the defendants, directing that the interim order and other originating processes be served at the gate of the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters. The court also ordered that the Chief Judge be served through officials at his chambers within the High Court premises.
The legal intervention comes amid heightened political tension in the state, following moves by lawmakers to initiate impeachment proceedings against the governor over alleged misconduct.
The matter has been adjourned to January 23, 2026, when the court is expected to hear arguments on the motion.
