Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has joined Nigerians in mourning the passing of Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed, elder statesman, veteran journalist, and co-founder of the iconic Newswatch magazine. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Hon. Ismaila Isah, the governor extended heartfelt condolences to Mohammed’s family and the Nigerian Union of Journalists.
Governor Ododo described the late Mohammed as a pioneer of investigative journalism in Nigeria and a proud son of Dekina Local Government Area, whose contributions to nation-building transcended the media space.
“Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed belonged to a rare generation of journalists who redefined courage, professionalism, and integrity. His work shaped public discourse and strengthened accountability in our democracy,” the governor said.
Mohammed’s role in establishing Newswatch alongside Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, and Dan Agbese in the mid-1980s marked a turning point in Nigeria’s media landscape, setting enduring standards for editorial independence and fearless reporting.
Governor Ododo also highlighted Mohammed’s distinguished public service, including his tenure as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and his dedication to the development of Kogi State.
“His love for Kogi State was evident in his commitment to its growth and his willingness to serve in different capacities. He was a bridge-builder, a mentor to many, and a guiding voice in national affairs,” the governor added.
Governor Ododo prayed that Almighty Allah grants the departed soul eternal rest and provides comfort to the family, friends, and colleagues mourning his loss.
Mohammed leaves behind a legacy of journalistic courage, public service, and mentorship that will continue to inspire generations.
