Following weeks of tense negotiations, 17 more worshippers abducted from the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in Aiyetoro Kiri Bunu, Kogi State, have reportedly been released by bandits believed to be terrorists.
The release came after sustained dialogue between the kidnappers, the victims’ families, and the Aiyetoro Kiri Bunu Development Association, which spearheaded efforts to secure the victims’ freedom. Sources indicate that 13 worshippers remain in captivity.
The abducted victims were taken on Sunday, December 14, 2025, when armed men stormed the church during a programme, forcibly taking more than 30 members to an unknown location.
The incident sparked fear and outrage within the community, prompting immediate local-led negotiations.
Earlier, on January 1, 2026, seven worshippers were freed following a N15 million ransom payment, though the release was marred by tragedy: two victims died in captivity, and another passed away shortly after being hospitalized.
Subsequently, three more victims were released on Monday, January 12, followed by the release of 14 others on Tuesday, bringing the total number freed to 24 worshippers.
It was reported that the Kogi State Government did not participate in the negotiations or the releases, which were solely managed by the community and its local leaders.
Negotiations continue for the remaining victims as families and residents hold on to hope for their safe return.
