HURIWA Faults Rivers Impeachment Moves, Calls for Presidential Intervention

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed strong opposition to the renewed impeachment moves against Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, warning that the development poses a serious threat to peace, governance, and democratic stability in the state.

National Coordinator of the Association, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko in a statement released on Thursday, described the impeachment threat by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly as politically motivated and constitutionally questionable. HURIWA noted that although the lawmakers involved are reportedly now aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC), the actions are allegedly being driven by interests outside the party structure, a situation it said casts doubt on the legitimacy of the process.
HURIWA urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene promptly, stressing that as leader of the ruling party and head of government, he has a responsibility to prevent avoidable political crises that could destabilize Rivers State. The group warned that allowing such an impeachment to proceed under the current circumstances would weaken democratic norms and encourage political recklessness across the country.
The association also called on the leadership of the APC to assert party discipline by directing its members in the Rivers State Assembly to withdraw from the impeachment process. According to HURIWA, internal party control and respect for constitutional order must supersede factional interests and political vendettas.
Emphasizing that impeachment is an extreme constitutional measure, HURIWA said it should only be pursued where clear, proven cases of gross misconduct exist.
The group maintained that no transparent or credible process has so far established any impeachable offence against Governor Fubara, cautioning that democracy suffers when due process is replaced by political manoeuvring.
HURIWA further appealed to the Chief Judge of Rivers State to uphold judicial independence and resist any attempt to legitimize an impeachment process lacking constitutional merit, noting that the judiciary remains a critical safeguard against political abuse.
Calling for restraint and dialogue, the group urged all political actors, including former Governor Nyesom Wike, to allow Governor Fubara the space to govern in the interest of peace, stability, and development. It warned that prolonged political hostility discourages investment, slows development, and exposes citizens to unnecessary risks.
HURIWA concluded that Rivers State needs cooperation, institutional respect, and focused leadership, not recurring political confrontations driven by personal or factional ambitions, adding that the eyes of Nigerians remain firmly fixed on the unfolding situation.
