The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday took a decisive step in its probe of allegations rocking Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries as its founder, Pastor Chris Okafor, finally appeared before investigators after initially shunning a police summons.
Okafor reported at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, following mounting pressure and warnings over the legal consequences of ignoring a lawful invitation’
His appearance came amid widespread public outrage over allegations of sexual misconduct, abuse of authority and other grave claims levelled against him by multiple women, including former associates and church members.
Investigators disclosed that the pastor’s earlier refusal to honour the invitation stemmed from his reliance on a parallel investigation already ongoing at the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone 2 Command, Onikan, involving Nollywood actress Doris Ogalla. Okafor reportedly believed the zonal probe insulated him from responding to inquiries by other police units.
At the SCID, Okafor was questioned and his statement recorded. He was not detained, however, due to the absence of a formal complainant before the Lagos command.
A senior police officer said efforts to reach alleged victims had so far yielded no result, despite assurances of protection and logistical support.
“With an active investigation already in progress at Zone 2 where there is a complainant and a suspect, the Lagos Command has decided to stand down temporarily to avoid duplication,” the officer said, stressing that the case remains open.
“Our doors are still open to anyone willing to come forward. This is not the end of the matter.”
Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed Okafor’s presence at the SCID but declined further comment.
The police intervention follows weeks of damaging revelations that thrust the controversial cleric into the spotlight after Doris Ogalla accused him of reneging on a marriage promise. The allegations, backed by audio and video recordings circulating online, triggered intense public debate and calls for accountability.
Initially dismissing the claims as the handiwork of detractors, Okafor later admitted to some misconduct, publicly apologised to his congregation and stepped aside as senior pastor. He subsequently married a new wife, Pearl, on December 16.
As investigations continue, police authorities insist that public pressure, rather than influence or status, will determine the course of justice.
