AU Warns Against Power Politics as U.S. Action in Venezuela Sparks Global Concern

The African Union (AU) has condemned the United States’ military action in Venezuela,
The African Union (AU) has taken a firm stance against the reported U.S. military operation in Venezuela, warning that the alleged capture of President Nicolás Maduro and attacks on state institutions threaten the foundations of international order.
In a statement released Saturday, the continental body said it was closely monitoring developments in the South American country, describing the situation as deeply troubling and capable of undermining global norms governing relations among states.
Rather than focusing solely on the actors involved, the AU framed its concern around the broader implications of the incident, stressing that unilateral military actions set a dangerous precedent in global affairs.
“The reported abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and military actions against Venezuelan institutions raise serious questions about respect for international law,” the AU said, underscoring the risks such actions pose to national sovereignty.
The Union reiterated that the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the right of peoples to self-determination remain non-negotiable pillars of the international system, as enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
The AU urged all parties to prioritise dialogue, restraint, and lawful engagement, warning that escalating military interventions could deepen instability beyond Venezuela’s borders.
The statement adds to mounting international reactions as governments and multilateral organisations assess the potential global fallout from the unfolding crisis in Venezuela.
